What is personal training?
It’s probably a lot of what you’d expect – it’s about having someone to help you personally. It’s about more than going through the motions of some app or generic workout. It’s having someone that can understand you and help you achieve in a way that suits you.
Personal trainers will know how to tailor a session to your needs. They’ll be able to help make sure you’re working in a safe way and provide guidance and information to become more confident in yourself and your abilities. Cookie cutter workouts don’t take into account your available time or situation, and they won’t be able to provide feedback or answer questions you’ll have. They won’t take into account your likes and dislikes, your physiology, etc. A personal trainer is just that – personal to you and your needs.
Most importantly, with more and more advertisements and celebrities on social media trying to get rich quick, there is a lot of bad information out there. A trainer can help clear up the confusion, and help you know what will really help you achieve.
Why would someone need a personal trainer?
There are lots of reasons. Some may not know where to start off. Others may know what they need to do, but find it most effective when someone is able to help push them. Some may struggle to find time for exercise and so prefer someone to run them through some training without needing to know all of the ins-and-outs of exercise science. They could want some help training for sports or competitions. Or maybe they want to find ways to work out at home or nearby. The reasons are endless, really.
When/Where?
While many trainers work in gyms (Bannatynes, Pure, etc) this requires them to either work only with members of that gym, or they must pay a considerable fee to use as their workspace. For myself and many others, I work as a mobile-trainer. This means I don’t work with a lot of equipment, can vary the location of where we work(at home, a local park..), and most importantly, can support a wider variety of clients.
Costs?
I provide more information on other parts of my site, but the reason the cost may seem high for personal training is that it’s not just about the time we spend together. I am available outside of sessions for any questions, or to have a chat about fitness. I provide personalised plans, and depending on your needs, this may mean I need to do some further research to make sure I know how best to adapt to them. While I do need to pay my own bills, I want fitness to be something anyone can get into, and so I am always willing to figure out a way to help you out for a price that won’t break the bank. Do get in touch!
What is a session like?
Well, the first time we meet, we’ll sit and have a chat and find out about you, discuss relevant medical history, your goals, previous experience, and anything else that helps me to know what you’re looking for and to help keep realistic expectations. We might also then include some basic exercises as a kind of initial assessment of your abilities.
We’ll finish up with a final debrief of the session and look at options for the future.
Continued sessions will vary depending on your what you’re looking to achieve and what you’re comfortable with. We can explore a variety or exercises, stretches, etc. We can push you to your limits at a high intensity, or we can avoid becoming a sweaty mess. The important thing to note is that the session is about you!
